Die Länge der Spree beträgt rund 400 km (andere Quellen geben 382, 398 bzw. 403 km an), davon sind nur etwa 182 km schiffbar. Das Einzugsgebiet des Flusses umfasst 10.105 Quadratkilometer. Die Spree gilt als Nebenfluss der Havel, obwohl sie um einiges länger ist und an der Mündung mit 36 Kubikmeter pro Sekunde (m³/s) beim Pegel Sophienwerder mehr als doppelt soviel Wasser wie die Havel führt (15 m³/s, Pegel Spandau-Schleuse). Die Bezeichnung Spree hat ihren Ursprung im slawischen zpriav, zspriawa oder auch spiawe, was soviel heißt wie Sorbenfluss, nach dem heute noch im Oberlauf lebenden westslawischen Volk der Sorben.
